Vintage Crates

If you fancied a new way of storing fabric, magazines or bird seed, have you considered using a vintage wooden box? I have been collecting - or as Mr Lella calls it: hoarding - old crates for years and have found a few beauties along the way.

My particular favourites are the ones which have product stamped on the side.

This is an original Nestle's Condensed Milk crate from long before the days of cardboard packaging. I bought this crate off a dealer as it is unusually large and in very good condition but I do prefer to rummage under stalls in a muddy field for my finds.

All my candles are stored in this box due to its size.

Vintage fruit crates in good condition are getting harder to find and I snapped this Walpole Fruit Farms' crate up for £12 in the summer.

I brushed out the cobwebs, wiped it down and turned the fruit crate on its side. Old toys and vintage Lotto games provide a backdrop for my little collection of black and white panda bears.

Displaying your possessions is always a happy challenge so don't be afraid to try something new with similar wooden boxes and old board games from the 1950s. If you think it looks good then that is all that matters.

Heavy duty bottle crates are made to last and this tatty but fabulous old Bates of London example now holds magazines in the living room.

Last but not least is this smaller wooden crate which has found a temporary spot on a side table.

I love to mix old and new so if you would like to try this style, go to antiques and collectables fairs as well as flea markets. Keep your eyes peeled for fruit crates, boxes and even an old wooden drawer will look good on its side.

Here is a link to some of the best indoor/outdoor fairs in the UK. These events attract dealers from across Europe so if French champagne crates or an Italian olive box is what you want, make a note of your nearest fair and be prepared to haggle!  :)

Have fun and feel free to leave a comment.
